Distributions

Distributions are preconfigured and tested versions of AROS. They contain a lot of useful user applications that don't come with the main AROS.org binaries and will be of great interest to users. They may not have the latest core system, but their stability and user-friendliness is much greater than those of the nightly builds. If you are a user interested in checking what AROS has to offer, use the distributions to get the most complete AROS experience.

This month the developments were dominated by Nick Andrews who was working on animation.datatype and specialized animation classes. These components were missing for a long time in AROS and we are happy to see Nick take up this work. The work is additionally financed by a bounty hosted by Power2People.org. Nick already deliver the gif and mpeg classes as well as made substantial improvements to the anim class. MultiView was also extended along the way.

Following on topic of bounties, two new bounties were opened. First targets a new port of Python programming language. The complete work in split into 5 stages and for now the first stage bounty is defined which aims at porting the core of Python 2.7. The second new bounty will deliver the overscan support to AROS 68k Amiga chipset video drivers. More details can be found on Power2People

Further progress has been made on supporting 68k platform, with Scalos, a Workbench replacements, now functioning correctly under AROS 68k. In more 68k news, Olaf Schoenweiss released a new milestone build of his AROS 68k distribution called "AROS Vision". The version is now 3.0 and brings a lot of important improvements.

Following up on 3rd party developments, Frederik Wikstrom, who in November completed the FUSE bounty, delivered an updated version of the filesysbox.library and NTFS and exFAT drivers.

Closing the January highlights, AROS made it to AmigaFuture, the printed Amiga magazine. The January/February issue contains interview with Krzysztof Smiechowicz, one of core AROS developers.

Happy New Year to Everyone!

In Decemeber, while everyone was taking time to prepare for celebration of Christmas, a number of small developments happened.

Neil Cafferkey implemented support for refreshing MUI windows when a requester is opened on top of them and used it in AROS preferences programs. Neil also improved handling of HAM images in the ilbm.datatype, fixing palette and transparency issues. Toni Wilen extended the AROS 68k startup code to make it compatible with undocumented AmigaOS behavior. Thanks to this change it is now possible to run for example Shrinkler compressed 68k binaries. Stefan Haubenthal updated a number of language and keymap files as well as updated the fd2pragma tool to version 2.195.

December also saw an opening of a new bounty , targeting an improvement to Workbook - AROS 68k ROM based "Workbench" replacement. More details can be found on Power2People

Lastly, development was started to make Scalos, which is another "Workbench" replacement, work under AROS 68k.

Two major developments related to Linux hosted version of AROS reached significant milestones in November. Jyrki Koivisto continued development of the USB driver that communicates directly to Linux USB subsystem and brought it to a state where storage devices now can be accessed on the AROS side. Second development, the ALSA based AHI driver developed by Krzysztof Smiechowicz reached release level and is now included in the AROS nightly builds. It replaces the obsolete OSS based driver. This development was done based on bounty hosted by Power2People.org and this bounty has been closed as well.

While on topic of bounties, a bounty to deliver a working implementation of FUSE filesystem and read/write driver for NTFS filesystem has been completed by Frederik Wikstrom. The bounty was also hosted by Power2People.org. The sources of the port are not yet integrated into AROS, but are freely available on GitHub.

To close the November highlights, Neil Cafferkey continued his work on improving Zune and making it more compatible with MUI.

October saw two interesting new developements in Linux hosted AROS landscape. First, Krzysztof Smiechowicz started implementation of audio driver based in ALSA subsystem. Linux hosted AROS has been without sound for a long time - since the OSS system in Linux has been deprecated. First alpha version has been released. Driver is developed based on a bounty. Secondly, Jyrki Koivisto began work on USB driver that communicates with Linux usb subsystem and makes USB devices available from Poseidon.

Neil Cafferkey continued his work on Zune, AROS MUI replacement, by adding more test cases focusing on MUI List and Listview classes. Together with extending the tests, a few small fixes have been implemnented.

Last but not least, Oliver Brunner ported traceroute utility based on request from community.

Outside of AROS Development Team, the community received updates to two AROS distributions. Olaf Schoenweiss updated his AROS m68k distribution "AROS Vision" to version 2.6.9. and Pascal Papara released another preview build of his AROS i386 distribution "AROS Broadway", working towards version 1.0. Pascal also achieved one more nice milestone with 500 users beeing registered in his cross platform IndieGO AppStore that is available also for AROS.
